Dans l'armée américaine, la munition 7,62 mm « special ball » M118 est celle du fusil de tireur d'élite M24.Military cartridge that grew out of US trials of shortened .30-06 cartridges, adopted by NATO as its standard rifle and machine-gun round; the STANAG 2310 standardization agreement sets its technical specifications. The .308 Winchester is its civilian counterpart, introduced by Winchester before the US military adopted the cartridge. In the US Army, the 7.62 mm M118 special ball round is the ammunition of the M24 sniper rifle.
