Rifle and pistol at 10 metres: the pure-precision disciplines of the ISSF Olympic programme. A bullseye a few tenths of a millimetre across, jeweller-grade equipment and complete mastery of technique. This page brings together the essentials: disciplines, equipment, sighting and community.

Deux disciplines olympiques

Carabine 10 m

Two Olympic disciplines

10 m air rifle

Standing position, 60 pellets in qualification (the final is fired in 24 shots), on a bullseye whose 10 measures 0.5 mm. Jacket, diopter sights (rear aperture + ring foresight). Everything is detailed on the 10 m air rifle page.

10 m air pistol

Shot one-handed, arm extended, with open sights (rear notch + front sight). The 10 measures 11.5 mm. See the 10 m air pistol page and the analysis of errors with the diagnostic target.

Both events are shot with 4.5 mm diabolo pellets (.177) at low velocity (~170 m/s): consistency of the pellet and of the gun matters more than power.

Sighting, the crux of the matter

At 10 m, everything comes down to aligning the sights and managing the eye. The ISSF sighting simulator models parallax, the optics of the eye and the effect of adjustments — an excellent tool for understanding what you see through the rear aperture. See also The eye and sighting.
