Tirer l'ancien aujourd'hui

Firearms that made history
Before the cartridge
The flintlock gun and the spantole illustrate the era of black powder and muzzle loading. An overall picture is given in History of firearms.
Service rifles
The Lebel (the first military rifle to use smokeless powder), the M1 Garand, the USM1 carbine and the Swiss Schmidt-Rubin K31 — still prized by sport shooters. The Cold War era is represented by the M16, the American assault rifle emblematic of Vietnam, the military version of ArmaLite's AR-15.
Shooting historical firearms today
Many of these firearms are still shot in competition. Black powder and muzzle-loading shooting has its own international events: see the MLAIC events. As for ammunition, the 7.5 × 55 Swiss (GP11) of the K31 remains a benchmark for consistency.
