Balistique : de la chambre à la cible

Ballistics: from chamber to target

Ballistics describes the life of the projectile in three acts: its acceleration in the barrel, its flight to the target, and its impact. This page brings together the theory, the in-house calculators and the documentation needed to understand — and predict — each of these phases.

The wiki and the forum are in French.

Les trois phases de la balistique

The three phases of ballistics

1. Interior ballistics

What happens from the firing pin to the muzzle: powder combustion, pressure rise, acceleration of the bullet. A 0D model (Noble-Abel, Vieille's law) is detailed in the article Interior ballistics, and applied in practice by the estimator.

2. Exterior ballistics

Free flight: gravity, aerodynamic drag, wind, spin drift, Coriolis. This is the domain of the 3-DOF calculator.

3. Terminal ballistics

The impact: remaining energy, sectional density, penetration, expansion and transonic transition — the moment when a marginally stable bullet can become destabilised.

The common thread running through the three phases is the ballistic coefficient and the drag model (G1 or G7) chosen to describe the bullet.

The calculators

Two complementary engines, running entirely in the browser: the 3-DOF ballistic calculator (trajectory, drop, drift, using the BRL standard drag tables, checked every night against an independent solver), and the interior ballistics estimator (velocity and pressure for reloading). The output of one can be fed into the input of the other.
