Appendix B — Patch Selection and Jag Guide

Selecting the correct patch size is critical for effective cleaning. A patch should be tight enough to feel resistance but not so tight that the cleaning rod flexes significantly.

Patch Selection by Caliber

The following recommendations are based on using pierce-style jags and double-napped cotton flannel patches. The correct patch size should feel firm when pushed through the bore—tight enough to provide good contact with the rifling, but not so tight that the cleaning rod flexes significantly.

Recommended patch sizes by caliber, from Sinclair’s tests (Gravatt and Sinclair 1999, Appendix 11, pp. 163–164): pierce-style jags, often one caliber smaller than the bore, and Sinclair flannel patches. Makers’ current charts, written for jags matched to the bore, give smaller patches.

Jag Measurements

Jag dimensions as measured by Gravatt and Sinclair (1999, 164) in 1999. Current models may differ: Bore Tech now specifies \(0.245'' \times 2.645''\) for its .30 Proof-Positive jag.
